SmashMouth MLB WORLD SERIES & Outlier Finals

Surviving Coaches:

October is here (almost) and somehow, so are you!  Here's all you need to know about SmashMouth MLB World Series and Outlier Finals!

NOTE: There are 4 SmashBoards dependent on the results of the Wild Card Play-In games, numbered 1 thru 4 (clever, I know). The final Wild Card game is the NL game and ends at roughly midnight this Wednesday. You then have all day Thursday and until Friday at noon to submit your lineups based on the relevant SmashBoard. IN EITHER CASE, THE LIVE GAMES ARE ALDS G2 & G3 (Fri & Sun) and NLDS G1 & G2 (Fri/Sat). So all Fri/Sat/Sun games are SmashMouth live.

The various and sundry SmashBoards are avail here, but irrelevant of course until Wednesday 'round midnight:

SmashMouth WORLD SERIES
NICK MENCIA (11 - 9) @ RICHARD BROWNE (11 - 9)
Seriously, who'd have thunk it?!? Both take their hot hands into the WS, where eternal SmashMouth glory and a not-so-eternal but
not-too-shabby $450 awaits!

Outlier Finals
Tony Bedini (12 - 9) @ Tom Maiden (12 - 9)
Up is down, left is right, high is low and these two combatants take better records into the Loser's bracket Finals than our beloved World Series coaches. Regardless, an even less eternal (oxymoron anyone?) 50 smacks is no small consolation.

RAPID RECAP SmashMouth MLB & Outlier League Championships

Well, well, well, parity has raised its semi-attractive, plain Jane head as the anticipated -- and dare I say expected -- repeat of 2013's SmashMouth World Series was jolted into the reality of "any given Sunday." Or in this case, any given Friday & Saturday.  PHIL and GLENN are dead, long may they reign!RAPID RECAP

SMASHMOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
AL
#4 NICK MENCIA (11 - 9) -- 354
#2 GLENN ARONOW -- 221
NICK continues to play out of his mind and surprisingly passes every drug test -- well almost every one -- in trouncing, blasting, dismantling, denuding and demolishing GLENN.

NL
#4 RICHARD BROWNE (11 - 9) -- 252
#3 PHIL PEPE (11 - 9) -- 231
RICHARD's remarkable comeback culminates with Lukas Duda's walk-off 2-run jack to give NYM Closer Mejia the W, adding to the very long list of players PHIL must shun and renounce for the next 6 to 8 months.

Outlier League Championships
AL
#4 John Incantalupo (11 - 9) -- 255
#3 Tony Bedini (12 - 9) -- 280
Try as he might, the Outlier himself JOHN just can't break the spell and earn the half-assed glory of Outlier Champ. Meanwhile, TONY is all over it.

NL
#4 Chuck Ross (9 - 12) -- 305
#2 Tom Maiden (12 - 9) -- 312
The lucky 7 point margin was exactly not that this time around for CHUCK, as TOM steps up to hold on for a rousing victory.

On to the SmashMouth WORLD SERIES and Outlier Finals. Stay tuned for more details...

SmashMouth NFL Pioneer League W4!

Wow, no sooner did SmashMouth NFL start and we're already 1/4 of the way done with the regular season this coming weekend. Time flies when you're smashing the shiz out of the competition, eh?

A couple quick notes:

1) This week's Thursday Night Football is back in play and an option for picking, but those specific selection(s) must be submitted by 8pm kickoff Thursday eve.

2) Bye weeks also kick in this weekend, so 6 of you will just have to find something else to do. My suggestion is extra film session and more walk-throughs with no pads.

W4 MARQUEE MATCHUPS

GB @ CHI (Sun 1p)

BUF @ HOU (Sun 1p)
CAR @ BAL (Sun 1p)

NOLA vs Left Coast.

CHRIS PALUMBO (3 - 0) @ ROB TALLIA (1 - 2)
The Paesane Bowl.

MARIO HENRY (2 - 1) @
CHARLIE ALDRICH (1 - 2)
It's New Jersey by way of New England Pats by way of Rutgers by way of USC vs North Dakota by way of Charleston by way of Weisbaden by way of USC by way of Chicago. Or something like that.

GARY LAZARUS (2 - 1) @ JAMIE BURTON (1 - 2)
Rules? We don't need no stinking rules!

TOM MAIDEN (1 - 2) @ LEE FINKEL (1 - 2)
Highly advised to beat LEE by mid-double digits to avoid any shot at controversy and belly aching.

TONY D'AMATO (0 - 3)  @ ANTHONY ANNESE (2 - 1)
Paesane Bowl II.

TONY BEDINI (0 - 3) @ BRUCE WILLIAMS (3 - 0)
BRUCE has already awarded himself the SuperSmash title so TONY just acquiesce.

RICHARD BROWNE (2 - 1) @ JOE HENDERSON (2 - 1)
.750 is hella better than .500. Who wants it?

KEVIN CARTER (1 - 2) @ JEFF NIGRO (0 - 3)
The K-Man's need for a win is only trumped by JEFF's need to avoid another loss.

QUENTIN WALKER (0 - 3) @ MICHAEL WILLIAMS (0 - 3)
There's no tying in SmashMouth! Ergo, someone gets the W here.

JIM PEPE (2 - 1) @ VINCE CALITRI (0 - 3)

KEVIN KRUEGER (1 - 2)

RAPID RECAP SmashMouth NFL W3

Coaches:

We've got 5 unbeatens after W3's stellar battles. I am not amongst them, so another investigation is clearly in order!

W3 RAPID RECAP

ANTHONY ANNESE (2 - 1) --  124
GLENN ARONOW (3 - 0) -- 203

Well, one of 'em had to lose, the blood bath was just gravy... and cash icing on GLENN's cake for Weekly Smash/Maidzo glory.

CRAIG ROSENBAUM (3 - 0) -- 169
DANNY WILDE (1 - 2) -- 135

No controversy, just a good ol' fashion beatdown.

DeLANDIS BROOKS (1 - 2) -- 118
LISA CALITRI (2 - 1) -- 188

Speaking of beatdowns... and deja vu as DeLANDIS' is replicating last season's start. W1 Unique Pick, followed by losses including to tenacious Coach LISA.

JEFF NIGRO (0 - 3) -- 129
ROB TALLIA (1 - 2) -- 189

ROB tires of losing and kicks some tail.

TOM MAIDEN (1 - 2)  -- 168
BILL ROARK (3 - 0) -- 228

BILL, last year's King Of The Outliers, clearly has higher aspirations.

CHUCK ALDRICH (1 - 2) -- 143
CHUCK ROSS (2 - 1) -- 154

I had CHUCK winning all the way and Unique Pick goes to CHUCK as well with Cam Newton outdueling Troy Polamalu.

JAMIE BURTON (1 - 2) -- 136
MARIO HENRY (2 - 1) -- 208

MARIO gets back on track with a vengeance.

BILL CRONE (2 - 1) -- 168
TONY BEDINI (0 - 3) -- 132

BILL is looking more and more like a seasoned SmashMouth veteran. TONY not so much.

LEE FINKEL (1 - 2) -- 205
TONY D'AMATO (0 - 3) -- 174

LEE also wins sans controversy. Kinda sorta cuz with LEE there's always controversy :-)

ROB BAILEY (2 - 1) -- 196
KEVIN KRUEGER (1 - 2) --152

Uneasy rests the crown on the head of 2013 SmashMouth Champ KEVIN, who falls to the Power of ROB in a SuperSmash II rematch.

VINCE CALITRI (0 - 3) -- 169
JOHN INCANTALUPO (2 - 1) -- 181

JOHN turns in an uncharacteristic home field W as VINCE sinks uncharacteristically further into Loserville.

KEVIN CARTER (1 - 2) -- 128
CHRIS PALUMBO (3 - 0) -- 193

Go cuz!

MICHAEL WILLIAMS (0 - 3) -- 139
JIM PEPE (2 - 1) -- 172

Lights out for the ConEd man MICHAEL.

GARY LAZARUS (2 - 1) -- 191
QUENTIN WALKER (0 - 3) -- 151

Once GARY reads the rules, he shall be dangerous.

JOE HENDERSON (2 - 1) -- 148
J
IM GARDNER (2 - 1) -- 199
The good Doctor clearly keeps himself abreast of the NFL's best. Sorry, I had to.

SmashMatch Of The Week:
BRUCE WILLIAMS (3 - 0) -- 199
RICHARD BROWNE (2 - 1) -- 138

Newbie BRUCE's strategy of refusing to finish picking seems to be working. Hey, if it ain't broke...

GLENN engineers a massive comeback, which we never doubted. Kinda. Sorta.

NL SmashMatches
#4 RICHARD BROWNE (10 - 9) -- 319
#1 ROB TALLIA (10 - 9) -- 244

RICHARD pummels ROB whilst lazing on a Grand Cayman beach, or laundering money, or consuming enormous quantities of rum. Whatever he did, it worked.

SmashMouth MLB Playoffs RD 1 SCORE UPDATE

Likely NL MVP & Cy Young winner and otherwise Mr. Reliable Clayton Kershaw was anything but despite earning his 20th win vs the Cubbies. Clearly, anyone taking Kershaw and LAD Pitchers vs CHC batters in first two picks expected a minimum +30 net point edge (yes, Clayton, you've spoiled us rotten). Instead, he ekes out a paltry +2.57 average net? Unacceptable!

For full lineups and score detail go here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rZLlvKdIuA3mVFDBNSBGjte8PSsg9Mr43pdKff2bWPI/edit#gid=1572755623

Here are scores entering today's deciding games:
#4 NICK MENCIA (9 - 9) -- 137
#1 JIM PEPE (13 - 5) -- 146

Really really not cool, Clayton!

#3 SAM CANTOR (11 - 7) -- 130
#2 GLENN ARONOW (11 - 7) -- 96

GLENN's ship be sinking and the sky's the limit.

NL SmashMatches
#4 RICHARD BROWNE (9 - 9) -- 151
#1 ROB TALLIA (10 - 8) -- 113

Getting saddled with PIT Pitchers as DH generally won't help ROB's cause.

#3 PHIL PEPE (10 - 8) -- 183
#2 TOM MAIDEN (10 - 8) -- 132

OK so last season PHIL crawls into the playoffs and proceeds to win 3 straight by an average of +122.7 en route to the World Series crown. Here we go again...

OUTLIER PLAYOFFS
AL SmashMatches
#4 Gary Lazarus (7 - 11) -- 119
#1 Tony Bedini (9 - 9) -- 155

#3 Vince Calitri (8 - 10) -- 156

#1 Joe Henderson (8 - 10) -- 176

#3 Chris Zeig (7 - 11) -- 129
